St Francis of Assisi
San Francesco d'Assisi
Merchant's son turned poor brother, friend of birds and peacemaker of Assisi
Francis of Assisi (San Francesco d'Assisi) was born around 1181 in Assisi, Umbria, as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, a merchant's son. He gave up his inheritance to live in poverty, rebuild ruined chapels and care for lepers. The brothers who gathered around him became the Franciscans. He died on 3 October 1226 and was canonised in 1228.
Devotees turn to him for peace, care for the poor and sick, and love of creation and animals. Stories tell of him preaching to the birds, making peace with a wolf at Gubbio and setting up a living Nativity scene at Greccio. Franciscan communities honour him, and he is loved well beyond Catholicism, in pet blessings and garden statues. 2026 marks 800 years since his death.

- Birds and animalsBirds rest on his hands or shoulders, and sometimes a wolf (recalling Gubbio), a lamb or rabbits appear beside him, recalling his love of creation.
