Ma'at

𓁦 mꜣꜥt

Egyptian goddess of truth, justice and the feather that weighs the heart

Ma'at (Maat, Mayet) is the ancient Egyptian goddess of truth, justice, balance and cosmic order, and also the principle that keeps the universe on its right course. The idea of maat is very old, and from the New Kingdom she is called the daughter of the sun god Re. Kings ruled by upholding maat against isfet, chaos. Judges and the vizier, known as Priest of Ma'at, were linked to her. Devotees turn to her for truth, fair dealing and balance.

In the Hall of Two Truths, the heart of the dead was weighed against her feather. No temple of her own is known before the New Kingdom, and statuettes often show her as an offering presented to other gods. Today she is one of the most popular Kemetic deities, honoured daily at shrines in Kemetic Orthodoxy and other Kemetic groups.
