Saraswati
सरस्वती
Goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts, robed in white on a white lotus
Saraswati (Sarasvati, Sharada, Vagdevi) is the Hindu goddess of knowledge, speech, music and the arts. She first appears in Vedic sources as the personification of a sacred river, later identified with Vac, the goddess of speech. Traditions describe her relation to other deities in different ways: Puranic worship often names her Brahma's consort, while Shakta devotees honour her as an independent manifestation of the supreme Goddess.
Students, writers, artists and performers turn to her, setting books and instruments before her at Vasant Panchami in spring and in the last days of Navaratri. At Sringeri, Adi Shankara is said to have invoked and consecrated her as Sharadamba, the divinity of knowledge. She is also honoured in Jainism and, as Benzaiten, in Japan.

How it's celebrated. In Karnataka, Ayudha Puja is part of Mysuru Dasara, when the palace worships royal weapons, elephants, horses and vehicles. Homes decorate vehicles and tools, and an ash gourd is broken. In Kerala, books and instruments placed on Durgashtami evening are worshipped on Navami without being touched. How it's celebrated. The ritual typically begins with prayers to Ganesha and Saraswati. The child, seated with a guru or elder, traces letters such as Hari Sri in rice on a plate. It is held at temples such as Panachikkadu, Paravur Dakshina Mookambika and Chottanikkara, and at schools, cultural centres and homes. People of other faiths also take part. Saraswati Balidan / Saraswati Puja8 October 2027
Balidan, the 'offering', is the third day of the northern Saraswati Puja sequence, on Maha Navami, linked to Uttara Ashadha nakshatra. In the South the day is Saraswati Puja with Ayudha Puja, the same celebration as the Maha Navami feasts listed for 2026.
How it's celebrated. In the Balidan tradition devotees bathe early, worship the goddess and perform a havan, with coconuts offered into the fire.
