He tends the animals by night, and on Christmas night families set out a bowl of porridge for him, with a pat of butter on top. The butter is the important part: the tales say a tomte takes real offence if it's missing.

In Scandinavian folklore the tomte, or nisse, is the small grey-clad guardian of the farm. Unseen, he tends the animals by night, braids the horses' manes and keeps the place in good order. He asks little: courtesy, and a bowl of Christmas porridge with a pat of butter on top. Forget the butter and tales say he turns sulky, or worse. Treat him well, and the farm is said to prosper. Today families still set out a bowl on Christmas night.

A Next Level 3633 cotton muscle tank, soft combed ring-spun cotton with dropped armholes, printed with the design and its line.

From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
