“Riding a goose, obviously.” Aphrodite, Riding the Goose.
The story behind the line. It's a real ancient image. On a white-ground Athenian drinking cup of about 460 BCE, painted by the artist we call the Pistoxenos Painter and now in the British Museum, the goddess of love rides calmly through the air on a goose, fully dressed, a sprig in her hand. It's exactly as serene and as wonderful as it sounds.
Aphrodite (Ἀφροδίτη) is the Greek goddess of love, beauty and desire. Hesiod tells that she rose from sea-foam off Cyprus and Cythera, while Homer names her the daughter of Zeus and Dione. Her great sanctuary stood at Paphos. Athenian vase painters show her graceful and fully dressed, hair bound in a scarf, riding a goose with a sprig in her hand. Worshippers knew her as Ourania, the heavenly, and Pandemos, of all the people.
Printed on a heavyweight Comfort Colors garment-dyed sweatshirt, soft and lived-in.
