“Every god chipped in.” Durga, Rider of the Lion.
The story behind the line. In the Devi Mahatmya, the buffalo-demon Mahishasura had driven the gods from heaven. Their blazing radiance poured together into one shining goddess, Durga, and each god gave her a weapon from his own: Shiva his trident, Vishnu his discus, Varuna his conch, Vayu his bow. Her devotees add that the power was hers all along.
Durga is the warrior Mother of Hindu devotion. In the Devi Mahatmya the gods pour their combined radiance into one woman, and each places a weapon in her hands: trident, discus, conch, bow and more. Mounted on her lion, she faces the shape-shifting buffalo-demon Mahishasura with a serene face. Her victory is remembered through nine nights of Navaratri, in Bengal's clay-image Durga Puja, and on Vijayadashami, the tenth day.
From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
Three ways to wear it: the classic tee is soft and lightweight ($29); the garment-dyed tee is heavier, with a softly faded, lived-in colour ($36); the garment-dyed one-ink tee prints the design and its line in a single ink, in soft earthy colours ($34).
