Ganga is the river Ganges seen as a goddess: a mother who flows. In the old tales she lived in heaven until King Bhagiratha's austerities called her down, and Shiva caught her in his hair so the earth would not break under her fall. Devotees greet her as Ganga Maiya, bathe in her waters, light lamps for her at dusk, and honour her as the one who purifies and carries souls toward peace. She rides a makara, holding a lotus and a pot of sacred water.
A portrait of Ganga in the devotional painting style of Hinduism: the river Ganges worshipped as a goddess, linked in the Puranas with Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva [1][8], printed on museum-grade matte paper.
