Hermes is the quick-witted messenger of the Olympian gods, son of Zeus and the nymph Maia. Greeks met him at crossroads, doorways and boundary stones, and asked his blessing on roads, trade and safe journeys. Legend says he made the first lyre from a tortoise shell on the day he was born, then charmed Apollo into friendship. Artists show him as a young traveler in a broad hat and winged sandals, holding the herald's staff wound with two snakes.
A portrait of Hermes in the devotional painting style of Ancient Greek religion, honoured today in Hellenic polytheism, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
