Ix Chel is the name Spanish writers of the 1500s recorded for a Maya goddess of childbirth and healing. Women crossed the sea to her sanctuary on Cozumel, and midwives kept her image near the birth bed. In the codices an aged woman with jaguar ears and a serpent in her hair tips a jar of rain. Scholars still debate how her many faces fit together, and whether she was ever truly a moon goddess.

A portrait of Ix Chel in the devotional painting style of Mesoamerican & Andean Traditions, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
