Ji Gong (濟公) began as Daoji, a Chan monk of the Southern Song who bent the monastery's rules. He wore patched robes, carried a worn fan and a wine gourd, and laughed at pretension. Yet the tales say he healed the sick and stood up for the wronged, and Taiwan's temples now honour him as the Living Buddha. His smile carries an old lesson: look past the ragged surface, because what matters most is the heart.

A portrait of Ji Gong in the devotional painting style of Chinese folk religion and Taoism, where he is worshipped as 濟公活佛, printed on museum-grade matte paper.

From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
