Jizō, the bodhisattva known in India as Kṣitigarbha, vowed to help beings in every realm until all are free. In Japan he is a familiar friend: a gentle monk with a shaved head who stands by roadsides and temple gates, watching over travelers and children. He carries a ringed staff and a wish-granting jewel, and people tie red bibs and caps on his statues to keep him warm as he keeps watch.
A portrait of Jizō in the devotional painting style of Japanese Mahāyāna Buddhism and folk practice, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
