Kūkai, honoured as Kōbō Daishi, was a monk from Shikoku who sailed to China, returned with the esoteric teachings, and founded Shingon Buddhism on Mount Kōya. Shingon holds that he never died but sits in deep meditation at Okunoin. On Shikoku, pilgrims walking the eighty-eight temples wear a sedge hat and carry a staff, trusting that the Daishi walks beside them, two travellers on one road.
A portrait of Kōbō Daishi in the devotional painting style of Japanese Buddhism: Shingon, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
