The story behind the line “Never walking alone.” It's about the Shikoku pilgrimage, a walk through eighty-eight temples. Pilgrims trust that Kōbō Daishi, the monk who founded Shingon Buddhism, walks beside them. The idea is called dōgyō ninin, "two travelling together." They even treat their walking staff as the Daishi himself, so on that road nobody is alone.
Kūkai, honoured as Kōbō Daishi, was a monk from Shikoku who sailed to China, returned with the esoteric teachings, and founded Shingon Buddhism on Mount Kōya. Shingon holds that he never died but sits in deep meditation at Okunoin. On Shikoku, pilgrims walking the eighty-eight temples wear a sedge hat and carry a staff, trusting that the Daishi walks beside them, two travellers on one road.
A light, flowy Bella+Canvas 8803 scoop-neck muscle tank for the studio and the street (runs small), printed with the design and its line.
