The story behind the line “Mazu has your back.” "Has your back" means someone's looking out for you, and with Mazu that's close to literal. She's the goddess of the sea, and the story goes that as a girl she stood on the shore in red to guide fishing boats home through storms. In Taiwan she's called Tianshang Shengmu, the Holy Heavenly Mother.
Mazu (媽祖), goddess of the sea, has watched over sailors and fishing families since the Song dynasty, when she was born on Meizhou Island in Fujian. In Taiwan she is loved like a mother: every spring hundreds of thousands of pilgrims walk for days to carry her through the countryside.
