“He taught his father.” Murugan, Two Companions from One Tree.
The story behind the line. It's the story of Swamimalai, one of Murugan's six sacred abodes in Tamil Nadu. The young god asked Brahma the meaning of Om, and Brahma couldn't explain it. Then Murugan explained it to his own father, Shiva, who listened like a student. So there he is worshipped as Swaminatha, Shiva's teacher.
Murugan is the ever-youthful god cherished across the Tamil world, from the hilltop shrine at Palani to the golden statue at Batu Caves. Son of Shiva and Parvati and brother of Ganesha, he carries the vel, the lance his mother gave him, and rides a peacock beneath a rooster banner. In Tamil tradition he stands with his consorts Valli and Devasena; in much of North India he is Kartikeya, the celibate commander. Devotees see in his lance wisdom that pierces ignorance.
From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
Three ways to wear it: the classic tee is soft and lightweight ($29); the garment-dyed tee is heavier, with a softly faded, lived-in colour ($36); the garment-dyed one-ink tee prints the design and its line in a single ink, in soft earthy colours ($34).
