Catholic tradition tells that in December 1531, on Tepeyac hill near Mexico City, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an Indigenous man, and asked for a church to be built there. When the bishop wanted a sign, she sent Juan Diego to gather roses blooming out of season. He carried them in his tilma, and when he opened it, her image was on the cloth: a young woman with a mestiza face, wrapped in a starry mantle and surrounded by rays of sunlight.
A portrait of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the devotional painting style of Catholic Christianity, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
