“Roses in December.” Our Lady of Guadalupe, Roses in the Tilma.
Catholic tradition tells that in December 1531, on Tepeyac hill near Mexico City, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, an Indigenous man, and asked for a church to be built there. When the bishop wanted a sign, she sent Juan Diego to gather roses blooming out of season. He carried them in his tilma, and when he opened it, her image was on the cloth: a young woman with a mestiza face, wrapped in a starry mantle and surrounded by rays of sunlight.
Printed on a heavyweight Comfort Colors garment-dyed sweatshirt, soft and lived-in.
