“Give in secret.” St Nicholas of Myra, Bishop of Myra.
The story behind the line. The best-loved story about St Nicholas: a poor father had no dowries for his three daughters, so Nicholas came by night and tossed a bag of gold through their window, one for each daughter, so no one would know who gave it. Those three bags are the gold balls in his icons, and the start of his gift-bringing legend.
Nicholas was a fourth-century bishop of Myra, in what is now Turkey, and he became one of the most loved saints in both East and West. Tradition remembers him tossing three bags of gold through a window by night, calming storms for sailors, and standing beside the wrongly accused. Icons show an elderly bishop with a short white beard, one hand raised in blessing and three golden balls resting on his Gospel book. Santa Claus grew from his legend.
From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
Three ways to wear it: the classic tee is soft and lightweight ($29); the garment-dyed tee is heavier, with a softly faded, lived-in colour ($36); the garment-dyed one-ink tee prints the design and its line in a single ink, in soft earthy colours ($34).
