Nicholas was a fourth-century bishop of Myra, in what is now Turkey, and he became one of the most loved saints in both East and West. Tradition remembers him tossing three bags of gold through a window by night, calming storms for sailors, and standing beside the wrongly accused. Icons show an elderly bishop with a short white beard, one hand raised in blessing and three golden balls resting on his Gospel book. Santa Claus grew from his legend.
A portrait of St Nicholas of Myra in the devotional painting style of Christianity: venerated across Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran churches, and in every Christian tradition that honours saints [3][14], printed on museum-grade matte paper.
