Raphael's name means 'God heals.' In the Book of Tobit he walks beside young Tobias on the long road to Media, disguised as a traveller named Azarias, and the journey ends in a wedding and a father's restored sight. Only at the end does he reveal himself as one of the seven angels who stand before God. Pilgrims, travellers and the sick have long asked for his company on the road. He carries a staff for the way and a fish from the river Tigris.
A portrait of St Raphael the Archangel in the devotional painting style of Christianity: venerated as an archangel in the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
