Margherita Lotti, called Rita, was born near Cascia in Umbria in the fourteenth century. She was a wife and mother, then a widow, and at last an Augustinian nun after being turned away more than once. Tradition says that while she prayed before a crucifix, a thorn from Christ's crown marked her forehead. On her deathbed, a rose bloomed in winter. Today many turn to her as the saint of impossible causes, and roses are blessed on her feast, May 22.
A portrait of St Rita of Cascia in the devotional painting style of Christianity: Catholic Church. She was an Augustinian nun and is honoured as a saint of the Order of Saint Augustine, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
