The story behind the line “Ask your mother.” It's about a Catholic custom: asking Mary, the mother of Jesus, to pray for you, which is called intercession. Devotees see her as a mother who takes your request to her son. It's the old family advice, go to Mum first, brought to heaven.
Mary of Nazareth, a young Jewish woman of Galilee, is honoured by Christians as the mother of Jesus. The Gospel of Luke tells how the angel Gabriel greeted her and how she answered, in the King James wording, "be it unto me according to thy word." Orthodox Christians call her Theotokos, the God-bearer, and Catholics invoke her under many titles. Painters wrap her in a veil and a blue or deep red mantle, often holding her child.
