Mazu, goddess of the sea, was born Lin Moniang on Meizhou Island in Fujian in the 10th century, and became the protector of sailors and fishing families across the Chinese-speaking world. In Taiwan she is loved above almost all others; her yearly pilgrimage draws hundreds of thousands of walkers through the night. This design is drawn in the Q版 style, the cheerful cartoon look you'll find on temple souvenirs all over Taiwan.
