Annapurna (अन्नपूर्णा) is the Hindu goddess of food and nourishment, a form of Parvati whose name means “filled with food.” Her best-loved story is set in Kashi: when Shiva called the material world an illusion, Parvati withdrew and the world went hungry. She returned as Annapurna and opened a kitchen in Varanasi. Shiva came with his begging bowl, and she fed him with her own hands. Devotees picture her enthroned, a golden ladle in one hand and a bowl of rice in the other.

A portrait of Annapurna in the devotional painting style of Hinduism: a form of the goddess Parvati, printed on museum-grade matte paper.

From The Deity Project, a living encyclopedia of the sacred.
