In Japanese folklore, the kitsune is a fox grown wise with age. Storytellers say it can take human shape, kindle foxfire in the dark, and earn a new tail with each century, up to nine. Some foxes play tricks on travelers; others, the zenko, serve the rice kami Inari as messengers, and stone pairs still guard Inari shrines. On New Year's Eve in Tokyo's Oji district, townspeople wear fox masks and walk by lantern light, retelling the old tale of foxes gathering at a tree.
A portrait of Kitsune in the devotional painting style of Folk & Fairy, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
