Benedict of Nursia left the noise of sixth-century Rome for a cave at Subiaco, then founded Monte Cassino, where he wrote a short Rule for ordinary community life: prayer, reading, work and welcome. Gregory the Great tells how a raven carried off a poisoned loaf and a cup shattered at the sign of the cross. In his black habit, with crozier and closed book, he is honoured as the father of Western monasticism and a patron of Europe.
A portrait of St Benedict of Nursia in the devotional painting style of Christianity: venerated in the Catholic Church, printed on museum-grade matte paper.
