The story behind the line “Talks to birds. They listen.” It's about St Francis of Assisi. The story goes that he preached a sermon to "my sisters the birds", and they stayed and listened instead of flying away. That's why he's so often pictured with birds on his hands and shoulders, and why he's the patron saint of ecology.
Francis of Assisi, born around 1181, was a merchant's son who gave up his inheritance to live in poverty, rebuild ruined chapels and care for lepers. The brothers who gathered around him became the Franciscans. Stories tell of him preaching to the birds, making peace with a wolf at Gubbio and setting up a living Nativity scene at Greccio. Two years before his death in 1226 he received the stigmata. He is pictured in a plain brown habit tied with a knotted cord.
